Two members of the famous Wahlberg family spread some cheer to passengers at a Massachusetts airport Wednesday in the spirit of a tasty national holiday.
Donnie and Paul Wahlberg celebrated National Cheeseburger Day on Sept. 18 by surprising travelers at Boston Logan International Airport with free burgers and tater tots from the family’s franchise, Wahlburgers.
“It’s like Christmas,” Paul Wahlberg, who started Wahlburgers in 2011, told reporters Wednesday. “It’s actually always National Cheeseburger Day in our house.”
“This was not a holiday we celebrated until Paul came up with the idea to start a restaurant,” Donnie Wahlberg, a member of the boy band New Kids on the Block and an actor currently starring in the TV show “Blue Bloods,” added. “We think everyone should celebrate it because cheeseburgers bring happiness. What’s better than that?”
After speaking with reporters outside the Wahlburgers in Terminal E of the airport, Paul jumped behind the grill and Donnie behind the counter to serve burgers and tots to travelers as they passed by. The brothers later walked around the terminal to hand the burgers and tots to people. Donnie also stopped to take selfies and chat with fans.
“I was already having a good morning, so this made it better,” said Mark Robinson from East Boston, who was waiting for his flight to Japan with his girlfriend, Emily Akers, from Abington.
“It wasn’t on my Bingo list,” Akers said. “I was kind of shocked. I just happened to look up and [Donnie] was like, ‘want some tots’ and I was like, ‘hell yeah.’”
There are two Wahlburgers inside Logan Airport: One in Terminal C and one in Terminal E. The Wahlbergs said these locations serve as “a little taste of home” for people leaving or returning to Boston.
When it comes to a great cheeseburger, the brothers said it must be made with fresh ingredients, seasoned with just salt and pepper, have a good sear, a good bun and sprinkled with a little love. This is something that is evident in Paul’s craft, according to his brother.
“Like many chefs, Paul really loves what he does, he’s very passionate about it,” Donnie said. “It’s not just flipping burgers to him. It really means something to him to prepare food for people and he puts a lot of love and effort and care into it and I think that also really helps to make a great cheeseburger.”
And that’s something both Robinson and Akers can attest to, with both saying Wahlburgers is “really good.”
Wahlburgers started in 2011 with the chain’s first location in Hingham. The famous family — their brother, Mark Wahlberg, is a movie star and the whole family starred in the reality TV show “Wahlburgers” for several years — has its roots in Dorchester. The franchise has expanded to more than 100 locations nationwide, including nine in Massachusetts.
