Boston Herald: New Kids still rule the block
Danny was interviewed in a recent article from the Boston Herald about NKOTB's continued success.
New Kids still rule the block
New Kids on the Block thought they couldn’t get any bigger.
In 1989, the Boston boy band sold out arenas and cornered the market on Trapper Keepers. A quarter century later, the New Kids have lost their notebook dominance, but the coming arena tour will top ’89’s. It will also top their 2008 and 2011 tours.
When NKOTB reunited in 2008, they headlined the TD Garden. In 2011, they packed the Garden and Fenway Park a few days apart. This summer, the guys host their fifth annual cruise, play three shows at Mohegan Sun Arena and return to Boston for back-to-back Garden gigs.
“I’m shocked it’s still at this level,” Danny Wood said from his adopted home of Miami. “When you’re away for 15 years and you’re a pop group, you don’t know what to expect. Pop changes so fast, and it’s a young man’s game. I didn’t expect the first reunion to be so big. So to be playing three Mohegan Sun shows when we usually play one, that’s amazing.”
The New Kids’ career came crashing down in 1994 when the “Face the Music” album bombed. The guys went their separate ways. Between the five, they released a dozen solo albums, but few paid the music any attention. The boy band craze had been hijacked by Backstreet Boys, ’N Sync, 98 Degrees and other young talents.
But you always remember your first love — especially if your first love was cutie Jordan Knight or bad boy Donnie Wahlberg.
The New Kids kept the love flowing with a 2011 co-headlining tour with the Backstreet Boys. This summer’s “The Package Tour” features the New Kids with a reunited 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men.
Wood says the key to keeping fans in those stadium seats is creating a fresh experience on every tour.
“We’ve talked for a while about getting Boyz II Men on tour with us because we know they’ll work great with us,” Wood said. “We share management with Nick Lachey, so when we heard 98 Degrees was reuniting, we knew we had the perfect third band for this tour.”
Ticket sales have been surprising. Demand for a second reunion album is astounding — NKOTB’s sixth record, “10,” comes out Tuesday.
The group’s last disc, 2008’s “The Block,” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. With little competition from next week’s releases, there’s a slim chance “10” could earn the top spot.
Chart dominance is nice. But even if the album only squeaks into the Top 10, it proves New Kids fans aren’t fueled wholly by nostalgia.
“We did these town hall type events last year, and the first question everyone had was, ‘When’s the new album coming?’” Wood said. “We weren’t even thinking new album until people asked for it.”
Give the people what they want — even if it means spending your 40s performing, rehearsing and riding on a bus for days on end. Not that Wood’s complaining.
“We sing and dance for a living,” he said. “I have friends in Boston who are bricklayers. That’s work. We never look on our careers as work.”

Donnie Wahlberg's interview with The Day Connecticut
Donnie talked to The Day Connecticut. Here is the article.
Donnie Wahlberg walks a fine blue line
When he was younger, actor Donnie Wahlberg often was on the wrong side of the law. Now he's not only on the right side, he's leading a cheering section for the boys in blue.
Wahlberg, one of nine kids from a blue-collar suburb of Boston, not only has played a policeman on two impressive TV series: "Boomtown" and CBS' "Blue Bloods," but he's producing his own reality show about Beantown's cops, "Boston's Finest," airing on TNT.
"It's a big risk for any police department to do something like this, and I think, for them, they would only entrust it to a local boy," he says in a noisy lounge of a hotel here.
"I speak the same language as the people that the show is about, and I come from the streets that they patrol and that they grew up on themselves."
Wahlberg's own problems with the police happened when he was a kid scaling the charts with his band, New Kids on the Block. "My troubles were not in Boston, thank goodness. I didn't get into trouble back home," he says.
Indulging in tattoos, piercings and belligerent behavior, Wahlberg was charged with arson for setting fire in the hall of a Kentucky hotel. Charges were later dropped.
"I think my intentions when I started my band in 1984 or '5 were to be a straight-ahead guy, to take the right path," he says.
"When I became famous at such a young age and got in the spotlight, I really didn't expect the negative part that came with it. I didn't understand that; I wasn't prepared for that. I thought maybe I'd walk down the street and the pizza guy would go, 'Hey, Donnie, proud of you, come in and have a slice.'
"Instead I took up the local newspapers and read my band stinks, and we were phonies, and we were this and that - personal attacks on my family. I didn't understand that and didn't know how to deal with it. I became angry, bitter and wanted to prove myself and went about it the wrong ways."
Eventually he caught on. "At the end of the day what I really had to learn was that I really wanted to prove myself to myself," he says.
"To be 16, 17 years old and the biggest band in the world, how can you ever really feel worthy of that? I don't think deep inside we felt worthy of that. I think now, looking back, the career that my band members have and I've had and the career I had on my own, I can look back and say, 'I worked hard. And I've earned the things that have come my way because I didn't quit and I kept working hard.' But back then how can you know that? It was just a struggle for respect, and it was misguided. I've made a lot of bad choices because I didn't know any better."
Donnie, whose younger brother, Mark, has gone on to even greater fame, says it runs in the family. His brother, Bob, also is involved in "Boston's Finest." "I think we learned about hard work and drive from our parents," says Wahlberg, 43.
"My mother raised nine kids, my dad had to feed nine kids and they were, I think, determined not to fail. And I think in some ways we have that same determination that they sort of instilled in us.
"But none of us has nine kids, we're not faced with the same economic burdens that they had. But we sort of still have that drive. I think we've done a good job of nurturing the desire to not fail and turning it into a desire to succeed. A lot of people say they're afraid of failure, but they're really not. They're just afraid to do their best. Because if your best isn't good enough, what do you have left?"
He realizes he can't always be perfect. "I think one of the big turning points for me was coming to the awareness that I'm not really afraid to fail. I'm afraid to be my best. ... In an audition you do your very best and don't get the part, what do you have left? But the truth is if you do your very best you'll be at peace with what you put out there. And if you're the right person for the job you will be (cast) or not, and there's nothing you can do about that. I think that's one of the things that's been helpful for me, and I think it's one of the things my family - we sort of all seem to be on the same page - let's not be afraid to be our best."
Divorced from his wife, Kimberly Fey, Wahlberg has two sons, 20 and 11. He says the birth of his first son helped set him on the straight-and-narrow.
"It sounds cliche," he says, "but I stopped living for me and started living for him. It stopped being about my legacy and became about my ability to provide for him. I was 23. I was terrified."

Donnie Wahlberg's interview with More Magazine
Here is an interview Donnie did with More Magazine
More: Congratulations on your new series, Boston's Finest.
Donnie Wahlberg: I am so excited and proud of this series. I wanted to make a docudrama that would focus on the real lives of police offcers both on and off the job. Before filming could even begin, we had to earn the trust of these men and women. Our goal was to have the heart-stopping drama TNT fans expect to see yet not damage any relationships the charactes spent years building.
More: This time you are stepping behind the camera and calling the shots.
DW: Yes, I serve as the executive producer of the show. This has been a true labor of love.
More: In addition to this show, you also star as Detective Danny Reagan on the CBS drama Blue Bloods. You have a real things for cops, huh?
DW: I do [Laughs}. Heck, having played a cop quite a few times, I hope I have learned from all of these experiences. Frankly, I think Blue Bloods has prepared to do this new program. I now understand the procedural world of a police officer in many situations, such as catching the bad guy and, of course, making it home safe to their families every night.
More: Blue Blood focuses a lot on the importance of family, including having real sit-down family dinners. What is Donnie's view on family?
DW: That family dinner scene was the main reason I did Blue Bloods. I got the script for the show at the same time I was reading a bunch of different pilots. When I saw how that dinner scene would be in every episode, I got hooked, because that is a slice right out of my real life.
More: Do tell...
DW: When I was growing up, there were nine kids in my house sitting down every night to have dinner. We would argue, fight, disagree, hear opinions and share what we did that day, just like you see on the show. That scene takes me right back to my childhood and feels so real.
More: Family first?
DW: For me, family is so important, both as a dad and as a sibling.
More: Was it hard being one of nine children?
DW: I am the eighth of nine kids and have always been the organizer of the family. When my parents split up, I was in the seventh grade. I immediately became the one would plan Christmas Eve and Christmas. I would always decide whose house we were going to, and then I would organize my siblings, including my brother Mark [the actor and former rapper]. I was the one telling them what the plan would be and then informing my parents as to what the arrangements were.
More: Did everyone get along?
DW: We fight and argue a lot, like most Irish Catholic families, but we love each other a lot and would die for each other.
More: Your TV family the Regans shows us how they come together during a tragedy, such as the death of your TV brother, your TV son's coma and your character's arrest for drugs. How do the Wahlberg's come together when times are bad?
DW: The episode when Danny's son is in a coma was a story I pitched to our writer. One of the things I talked about during our discussion was when my oldest sister passed away a few years ago and what that experience was like for me and my family.
More: I read about your loss. Can you take me back to those days?
DW: I remember being in the hospital waiting room and what it was like having our big family there. Until my sister passed away, after a few days, she was only kept alive by machines. We were all there. It was amazing how everyone bonded and always made sure my mom was OK and holding it together. It was such a powerful experience, and made us pull together immediately. Everything else in life went out the window and we did what we did to get through something so tragic. Although I don’t like to call on personal memories when I am acting, it does help me understand the character better and make the story more believable for the audience.
More: Because you come from a close-knit family, this experience must have been so painful for you.
DW: It was unexpected and just awful. But we are tough, we love each other and band together in the bad times.
More: While we are on the subject of family, how do you juggle a busy Hollywood career and being a single dad to two children?
DW: That’s been tough, and a real sacrifice for my two boys. They know I love working the different jobs and they are very proud and excited by them all. In fact, my little boy, who is 11 years old, is going to come on tour with me this summer. At the same time, it’s been a real struggle. He is in a new school but only on rare occasions do I get to drive him to school.
More: Does he understand?
DW: He knows about my work. What’s unfortunate is that I get to attend so few of his special events, and for me that poses a real challenge. In fact, I just had a four-day weekend with him and it was so hard to leave because he sacrifices so much for his dad. As for my older son, he is 19 years old, so it is different for him.
More: Some of your fans still remember you as a member of the popular group New Kids on the Block. While some performers try to break away from the boy-band image, you are returning to it by headlining a production called The Package Tour. Why?
DW: I got the NKOTB back together five years ago. I can’t say everyone thought it was the best idea in the world, but I believe in it and my band mates. I think we have something special to offer and people wanted to see and hear it again. To me, that is a great feeling. I feel much better about my band than I did 20 years ago; in fact, I am happier to be a part of it now than I was back then. On Blue Bloods, I am the actor; I show up and do my thing. With the New Kids, I am the executive producer. I have a lot more creative input. It’s a really good balance, and always a great challenge.
More: Was it hard to make the transition from “boy-band member” to “serious Hollywood actor”?
DW: It was tough, but I don’t think my journey was any tougher than any other actor's. If you have ever been on an audition, you know how intimidating it can be walking into a room and seeing hundreds of people trying out for one part. No role was handed to me because I was a New Kid. I had to really fight hard and work hard to earn the industry’s respect. I was determined to stick with it long enough, and I did, until the breaks came.
Boston's Finest premieres on TNT February 27 at 9 pm ET.
Blue Bloods airs on CBS at 10 pm ET on Friday nights.
