Joey McIntyre Interview with The Rebel Yell

Joey and Eman did an interview with The Rebel Yell about their upcoming Vegas shows, the NKOTBSB tour and will there be a new album?

As I walk into The Lounge at The Palms, Joey McIntyre is Tweeting away feverishly on his phone. It’s 10:30 a.m. and the New Kid is in high spirits, waiting to finish his lineup of interviews for the morning. But this isn’t 1992 and New Kids on the Block is not the topic of discussion (for the most part). Instead, I’m meeting with McIntyre to talk about his new show at The Palms.

Starting Feb. 5, the New Kid will be performing in The Lounge at The Palms with producer and friend Emanuel (Eman) Kiriakou every Saturday of the month. Having worked with some of the biggest popstars in the business, Kiriakou and McIntyre’s show “One Too Many at Midnight” is a blend of early ‘90s throwbacks, top 40 covers and everything else in between. I sat down with McIntyre and Kiriakou to discuss the new show and how life is fairing — post NKOTB fame. I’d say the kids are alright.

The Rebel Yell: Have you been busy preparing for the show?

Joey McIntyre: Yeah, we hadn’t performed like this for about five or six years and then we did a couple shows in the fall and just got back together and you know it was so much fun.

RY: Why did you choose to perform in Las Vegas for this show?

JM: Our friend Zoe Thrall who runs the studio at The Palms is good friends with us, especially with Eman. She loved the idea and … we knew how perfect this room would be for what we do — you know, kind of an acoustic intimate fly by the seat of your pants show.

RY: What can we expect the show to be like?

JM: Well you know we’ve written a lot of music together so a lot of our original stuff. Of course a few New Kids songs, we try to do great covers. Some current stuff, you know, songs that are out now that we think are gonna be the future standards. In NY we did a Taylor Swift song, “You Belong to Me.”

RY: You’re [McIntyre] one of the pop all stars and you’ve [Eman] worked with some of the biggest pop stars. Who do you think is going to be the next up-and-coming artist?

JM: Well he’s just gonna say the people he works with!

Emanuel Kiriakou: No, I’m not actually! I think there’s so much good music out. I think Bruno Mars is really talented, and I actually knew him when he was writing for other people and struggling and I think he’s incredibly talented.

RY: So do you [McIntyre] write your own blogs on your website?

JM: All the time.

RY: Back in October, you announced on your blog that you were no longer performing with Eman and that it might be 25 years before you perform again as a duo. What happened?

JM: It was honest … I was trying to be honest by saying this is it, we’re not going to be performing anytime soon. And then this kinda came along … I wanted them to know that we’re not going to be doing a 25-city tour.

RY: Do you have any independent projects in the works?

EM: I’m working with Selena Gomez right now. I just did three songs with Jordin Sparks. I got a song that I’m really excited about with this band called Hot Chelle Rae.

RY: How is the crowd different from NKOTB fans? Do people expect NKOTB songs?

JM: You know, my fans know. But it’s always nice to get fans who don’t know. I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of people who have never seen this show coming to see [it.] … Obviously, [it’s] very different from playing the Staples Center or the Thomas & Mack arena, it’s a different setting. It’s very intimate and kinda anything goes.

EM: And they still get to hear Joe’s hits and the New Kids hits, but in a different way. In a way that they have never heard.

JM: Yeah.

RY: Speaking of New Kids, the band announced a tour with Backstreet Boys that will launch this summer. Are you excited to be back?

JM: Yeah, you know, it’s fun … the two groups get along really well together and we both have been doing it a long time so we know how lucky we are to be doing what we’re doing again … we want to make it one big amazing awesome concert ride. Since New Kids have gotten back together, we started off thinking, ‘Okay this might be fun,’ but then it just snowballed into this rebirth of the relationship that we’ve had with our fans. Except they’re older now and they can embrace the past and they can feel young and feel current.

RY: You were in one of the biggest boy bands to date. How do you feel about New Kids now that you’re older?

JM: It is crazy. You know, it’s so long ago. All we know is that right now it’s great so whatever we did we must have done right by ourselves and by our fans.

EK: The fact that there’s still such a high demand for it says everything, that it wasn’t just a fluke. It was real.

RY: Is there going to be a new record?

JM: Another New Kids record?

RY: Yeah.

JM: The plot thickens. We would like to, you know, hopefully do some music together. It’s hard to get nine guys on the same page … It’s tough enough getting five guys on the same page now you got nine guys. So that music thing is definitely another level. It’s got great value. I really hope that we can do that.

Jonathan Knight writes about his sexuality in new blog

Jonathan Knight wrote a new blog in which he discusses being openly gay. (This is a response to a recent interview by Tiffany):

I have never been outed by anyone but myself! I did so almost twenty years ago. I never know that I would have to do it all over again publicly just because I reunited with NKOTB! I have lived my life very openly and have never hidden the fact that I am gay! Apparently the pre requiste to being a gay public figure is to appear on the cover of a magazine with the caption "I am gay". I apologize for not doing so if this is what was expected! My belief is that you live your life by example, and not by a caption on a magazine! If there ever has been any confusion about my sexuality, then you are someone that doesn't even know me!

I love living my life being open and honest, but at this time I choose not to discuss my private life any further! My fellow band members don't discuss their private lives with their loved ones and I don't feel that just because I am gay, I should have to discuss mine!

Joey McIntyre Twitter Interview

Joey McIntyre did an interview on twitter (which they're calling a "twitterview") with WonderwallMSN: Here is what Joey tweeted:

Q: So what made you decide to do shows every Friday at @PalmsLasVegas this February?

Joey: Hey! We wanted to start kind of semi- "residence gig"- Nothing like having a "home" in Vegas at the Palms

Q: Fun! Here's a fan Q from @RocksicleLover: Where are you most-likely headed after your Vegas shows? Slots? Poker? Bar? Bed?

Joey: Most likely headed to the bar for a nite cap and then off to bed. Gotta pace myself with this Vegas gig.

Q: Especially since you have the @NKOTBSB tour this summer! How are you preparing for it?

Joey: We are just now talking about schedule. Gonna be a unique prep for this tour- a lotta songs to put together!

Q: Will those of us who can't make the show be able to get a dvd or cd of it?

Joey: We are gonna be recording the shows and I want to bring cameras in too!!! DVD baby! we'll see if we can do it:)

Q: Are you more excited to do the old #NKOTB favorites or showcase some new material on the tour?

Joey: I love singing old and new stuff. Its all about connecting to the material- regardless. Finding the connection.

Q: Will the Vegas experience continue after the tour is over?

Joey: I hope so. This Vegas show is gonna be a blast, but its also a serious dream for me and @emanuelkiriakou

K- I'm done...gotta head over to @emanuelkiriakou studio to rehearse- cant just talk about the show. Gotta make it happen!! Luv ya. talksoon

Boston Globe Article about New Kids Fenway Show

Here is an article from the Boston Globe about the NKOTBSB Fenway show:

New Kids on the Block made it official today. The Boston-bred boy band will be strutting their stuff in centerfield this summer when they join Backstreet Boys for one night, and maybe more, at friendly Fenway. Wearing Red Sox jerseys and joking that they're now official members of the Olde Towne Team, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood, and Jordan and Jonathan Knight confirmed what's been rumored for awhile: Following in the footsteps of the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, the Police, Dave Matthews, and Aerosmith, among others, NKOTBSB will perform at Fenway June 11. (The ballpark has permits for a show June 12, too, and the boys bands have a sold-out show at TD Garden June 4.) "We've been walking around downstairs just sort of overwhelmed," said Wahlberg, who took a break from filming his TV show "Blue Bloods" in New York to be at today's Fenway press conference. "I'm kind of starstruck to meet Larry (Lucchino). I was looking for Theo (Epstein), but I couldn't find him." Joining NKOTB were Backstreet Boys Howie Dorough and Brian Littrell, who said it'll be an "honor and a thrill" to perform at Fenway with the New Kids. "Every little boy on a field somewhere dreams about playing at this park," said Littrell. "Mom, we made it!" (He added that his Backstreet bandmate A.J. McLean, who recently checked himself into rehab, is doing well.) The Fenway show is part of longer tour for the two bands, and there seems to be genuine camaraderie between the crews. Huddled in a suite overlooking the snow-covered field after today's announcement, the bands promised a no-holds-barred spectacle this summer. "We're going to pull out all the stops," said Donnie. While New Kids have played to packed stadiums all over the world, Joey Mac said it'll be a special treat to play at fabled Fenway. Is he intimidated that some of the biggest bands in the music business have played there? "A bunch of nobodies," he said with a smile.

Donnie to be on the CBS Early Show tomorrow

Donnie sent out a twitter update saying he'll be on the CBS Early Show tomorrow!

Joey McIntyre Interview with Entertainment Tonight

Joey McIntyre did an interview with Entertainment Tonight and he gives an update on AJ McLean. He also talks about Aaron Carter, advice for Justin Bieber, his son Rhys and the "Hear the World" foundation.

Video courtesy of yikes77

New Kids on the Block singer Joey McIntyre has been in the music business for over 24 years and has seen some friends battle with addiction in the limelight, including Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean who recently made the decision to enter rehab.

"A.J. is a sweet kid, good kid and extremely talented, so we're all there for him," said Joey. AJ admitted himself earlier this month before heading on the huge NKOTB/BSB tour.

Young star Aaron Carter is reportedly seeking professional help as well to deal with some unknown "emotional and spiritual issues," and Joey commended Aaron for making that step.

"To me it's usually a good thing when someone can take some time and retreat from it all and, you know, just get a little bit more centered," Joey said, encouragingly.

Justin Bieber has managed to stay clean in his career thus far and Joey gave some advice to the star for staying on the right track.

"Hopefully, kids like Justin… there's a lot of young artists out there and hopefully they got good family around them and they just, you know, be able to take the ups and downs," Joey said.

On Monday, Joey filmed a TV spot for Hear the World Foundation, which raises awareness about hearing loss, how to recognize it and steps that can be taken to prevent its occurrence.

This organization's cause personally affects Joey since his one-year-old son Rhys was diagnosed with severe hearing loss, but the singer says that "being aided by the hearing aids, he is hearing as a normal 13-month-old."

Boston Herald Report: NKOTB to Announce Fenway Concert on Wednesday

According to an article in the Boston Herald, NKOTB will be announcing a performance at Fenway this Wednesday. The article is below:

New Kids bringing the right stuff to Fenway
By Jed Gottlieb and Thomas Grillo / Music | Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Do New Kids on the Block have the right stuff for Fenway Park?

Looks like it. The reunited Boston boy band is expected to give a concert at the hallowed home of the Red Sox on June 11, with tour mates the Backstreet Boys, according to a source close to the deal. The official announcement from concert promoter Live Nation is planned for a press conference at Fenway on Wednesday.

“Long before they were famous, the New Kids were huge Sox fans and used to come and hang out at the ballpark quite often,” the source told the Herald. “When they made it big they still came to the park. It’s a huge thrill for them to play Fenway.”

Despite already having a sold-out show set for TD Garden just a week earlier on June 4, the New Kids in December pitched the Sox on a potential gig. The Red Sox then applied for show permits for June 11 and 12.

How eager are the New Kids to play Fenway? Eager enough to deal with the hassle and expense of changing an already tight tour schedule.

Currently the Fab Five — Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood and brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight — are slated to play Nassau Memorial Coliseum on Long Island on June 11. They will have to reschedule that date in order to join the short list of musical acts to have the honor of playing Fenway. There’s even an option to add a Sunday date if Saturday’s sells out — although that would mean canceling another already scheduled show at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ.

Sox owner John Henry and company began booking acts into the 98-year-old park in 2003 with Bruce Springsteen and have since welcomed Jimmy Buffett, the Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, the Police, Neil Diamond, Phish and Paul McCartney. But they didn’t tap local legends until last summer’s Aerosmith/J. Geils Band double play. That Boston-centric bill proved a smash and sold out in minutes.

But can the “Hangin’ Tough” kids draw like the “Toys in the Attic” rockers?

The answer: probably.

The New Kids reunion has been huge. In 2008, they sold out the TD Garden. A year later, they packed the Comcast Center in Mansfield.

Now the New Kids have doubled the fan fun by teaming with the Backstreet Boys for a boy band bonanza dubbed NKOTBSB. The joint tour is scheduled to play 41 shows this summer. The two acts have sold a combined total of more than 200 million albums (compared to Aerosmith’s 150 million).

Donnie was interviewed by Rolling Stone, here is a copy below:

Donnie Wahlberg Opens Up About New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys TourHe plans on covering Bon Jovi with Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean—in addition to other surprises

By Andy Greene
January 14, 2011 12:40 PM EDT
Donnie Wahlberg is a busy man. He's deep in the midst of the meticulous planning for the massive New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys summer tour, but he's also got a full-time job portraying Detective Daniel Reagan on the CBS police drama Blue Bloods. "We just filmed a dinner scene and I ate about four pounds of that veal thing, osso bucco," he says. "I feel a little sick."

It's a 24/7 schedule few people would welcome, but Wahlberg says he thrives on it. "I don't sleep very much," he says. "I really like to work though. I feel like a kid in a candy store."

Things will get even crazier in April when he goes into production rehearsal with his fellow New Kids and the Backstreet Boys for their tour. In a tough economic climate, the tour has been a gigantic success: Sixteen shows were just added to the itinerary, bringing the grand total to 41. "There were naysayers when the New Kids first re-formed in 2008 and there were naysayers for this," Wahlberg says. "It's sort of vindicating after years of people thinking we were sort of a flash in the pan."

The idea of the two boy bands teaming up was first floated a year ago when somebody suggested that the Backstreet Boys might open up some New Kids shows. "I just thought that was ridiculous," says Wahlberg. "I didn't want to even insult them with that offer. That's a co-headlining show."

Last summer, the Backstreet Boys were the surprise guest at the New Kids' Radio City Music Hall show when they came onstage to sing "I Want It That Way." "It caused such a stir and we really got along with those guys," says Wahlberg. "We said 'hey, let's look into a co-headlining show.'"

New Kids on the Block Cause Mayhem at Reunion Announcement

At preview performances during the American Music Awards and New Year's Rocking Eve the two groups performed their hits together, but Wahlberg says that won't always be the case during the tour. "Backstreet Boys fans don't want to hear the New Kids singing all of their hits," he says. "Just like our fans don't want to hear the Backstreet Boys singing all of our hits. I think we'll pick our spots when we want to work together onstage. We'll do some big numbers together, and a few surprises."

Wahlberg is tight-lipped about what those surprises might be, but he does have his eye on the possibility of a duet with A.J. McLean. "I could see him and me rocking out or sitting down with a couple of acoustic guitars and doing something like 'Wanted Dead or Alive' by Bon Jovi," he says. "I like the kid and we get along great." (McLean is currently in rehab for the third time; he has said he wanted to go in before the tour started.)

Kevin Richardson left the Backstreet Boys in 2006, though he has returned for the occasional special appearance. "He made his choice and that's the Backstreet Boys' situation to deal with," says Wahlberg. "If they wanted him back it wouldn't be a problem for us. Whatever he decides is up to him. As much as we're two bands teaming up, we're still two separate bands and their business is still ultimately their business."

Early on there were rumors that Boyz II Men were going to join the tour, but Wahlberg shoots those down. "That's not happening at this point," he says. "We're definitely planning a lot of surprises and we're in discussions with different people. We're all fans of Boyz II Men, but the momentum was so strong with these two bands after Radio City that this was just the way it had to be."

Though two of the three biggest boy bands of the past few decades are touring together, there are no indications that 'NSync are planning a reunion. Does Donnie think that Justin Timberlake will ever return to his boy band — and possibly one day tour with the New Kids? "That's up to those guys, and quite frankly it's probably up to Justin Timberlake," he says. "If that's something he decides to do, then he'll do it. It really has no bearing on us. I just have one goal right now: Make this tour as great as it can be and make every person that bought a ticket go home happy."

Donnie interview with Telegraph Journal

Donnie was interviewed by Telegraph Journal about Blue Bloods:

NEW YORK - Well, that show about the crooked family worked out well. How about a family of cops?

CBS would like to think so: that they can flip cable's Shakespearean Sopranos over to the right side of the law with Blue Bloods, a multi-generational New York police drama that is also bicameral: from One Police Plaza to the Staten Island family mansion. From Hell's Kitchen to the dining-room table.

And Blue Bloods is startlingly old-school, from its three-generation legacy of lawmen, to its Irish Catholic New York cop vintage, to its maleness. The Reagan family is headed by Police Commissioner Frank (Tom Selleck), grouched-up by emeritus grandpa Henry (Len Cariou) and fired by scion Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), the hard-boiled rebel detective.

As Wahlberg rolls in for the interview, he looks the part: steely and wary, fresh from shooting a scene on the Brooklyn set. He immediately lays out what Blue Bloods is not, starting with The Sopranos.

"(Tony's) the boss of a family. Danny's not the boss of anything."

Move on to 24, the time-bomb procedural.

"No, I don't see Blue Bloods as part of that genre. There was a race-against-the-clock aspect to the pilot, but it's really, 'Let's get the case resolved,' so we can get to know the family."

First, we get to know Danny, the kind of cop who, "on the one hand, he's saving a girl's life, on the other, he's sticking a guy's head in the toilet."

Yes, that happens in the pilot, as Danny administers porcelain justice to a suspected pedophile. "But there's a lot of cops on television who bend the rules for justice. That wasn't gonna be enough for me." He mentions the 'rogue cop' template of The Shield, because "what's interesting is to play a guy who bends the rules but then goes home and sits with his family who all know he's bending the rules and have different opinions but are willing to talk about them. It's sort of like taking (Michael Chiklis's) Mackey out of The Shield and putting him in a family he has to answer to."

In Blue Bloods, moral/legal dilemmas are hashed out over Sunday pork roast. The pilot is so intent on this model that the child-kidnap crime is solved in the first half.

"A lot of my friends who watched it said, 'That's it? Three suspects and the case is solved?' But it really did get us to the family. It's really the special thing about the show - the unique thing, anyway; not just three generations of cops, but three generations of cops with different opinions."

At this juncture, an Israeli interviewer suggests that American TV is "obsessed with family."

"Yeah, I don't share that opinion," Wahlberg says. "I think American TV used to be (obsessed) with family; there used to be many families on TV and they went away. They seemed to become . . . uncool.

"In fact, I heard a story yesterday about the show Homicide. (Writer/producer) Tom Fontana used to say to the network, 'We want to put in these family (segments),' and the network would say, 'No. Nobody wants to watch a family.' From the period of Homicide and the Law & Orders, the personal lives of cops became completely uninteresting and not a part of anything. The CSIs and Criminal Minds, NCIS - there's no real character aspects to those shows. That doesn't make them bad shows; it just means they're focused on the crime itself."

Blue Bloods, then, could be "the kind of family you couldn't put on television 30 years ago. It's very unpolitically correct, or whatever you call it."

Appealingly gruff, Wahlberg clearly enjoys his role. There is no "I" as he speaks; it's all "Danny." Blue Bloods is red-blooded masculine, and a rare series drama about male family roles. But there is a female presence. Bridget Moynahan plays Erin, a D.A. and Danny's by-the-book sister.

"They love each other to death. When I read the pilot, I felt like I was reading scenes from my sister and me in real life. Sometimes her point of view is very . . . specific. And mine is specific, as well. I literally had a picture of my sister's face in my head as I read those words."

As he returns to the set, I ask Wahlberg about his semi-retirement from a previous gig, as the tough kid in New Kids on the Block.

It turns out that, as we sat, a tour had been announced pairing New Kids and Backstreet Boys.

"A world arena tour. We're gonna start in Canada, actually." (Not quite, but they're in Montreal June 7, and in Toronto June 8 and 9).

Is there an album in the works?

"Probably. Working on that."

Because, for a song 'n' dance Kid turned cop, pop is about legacy, as well.

Blue Bloods airs on CTV and CBS on Fridays.

Joey writes about his shows in Vegas

Joey posted a new blog on his website in which he writes about his plans for his Las Vegas shows:

Vegas, Baby. Vegas.

This is not your father's Las Vegas. Hopefully,

It's your grandfather's Vegas, which was much cooler back then. But for a while now, Vegas is back. It lives up to all the hype. There's something for everyone- especially those who wanna start their night at midnight. And that's what we are gonna do in February at The Palms. Eman and I couldn't have dreamed it up any better. We have a lot of fun, but it means a lot to be playing in Vegas at such a special venue at legitimately the coolest and hottest hotel in LV. The Lounge is beautiful and a real throw back to the intimate rooms that all the legends would play. And they would play late (and early in the morning) at these places. Dean, Frank, Sammy- the audiences back then got to see these greats up close and personal. Now please... understand, I'm not thinking of us as legends and we are not trying to recreate something that will never be duplicated. But there is a spirit in this town, Las Vegas, that is tapped into every night. People feel it when it's authentic. It's that thing- that bang, that boom, that somethin' somethin'. I believe we are gonna feel that spirit and we won't let you leave The Palms until you feel it too. That feeling may be the one thing that happens in Vegas that doesn't stay in Vegas.

Article: New Kid trying luck at Palms

Here is an article from the Las Vegas Review - Journal with some more details about Joey's upcoming shows in Las Vegas and the possibility of extending the tour:

Do New Kids On The Block fans still stay up past midnight?

They do if they want to see Joey McIntyre up close and personal. And no excuses, because he has young children, too.

The singer teams with record producer Emanuel Kiriakou for a midnight showcase called "One Too Many At Midnight" on Saturdays in the Palms Lounge for a four-week run starting Feb. 5.

McIntyre and Kiriakou -- known on stage as "Eman" -- did their two-man show at Joe's Pub in New York and in other cities. They were approached by Zoe Thrall, who heads the Palms' recording studio and worked with Kiriakou when he produced other artists there.

Though McIntyre wears a tux in some of the YouTube clips, he won't be doing retro lounge or a Richard Cheese kind of thing, says Palms entertainment director Michael Goodwin.

Instead, the two cover all manner of pop and rock favorites (including some New Kids essentials) with a party atmosphere.

If the first month goes well, both sides are interested in extending. McIntyre would commute from Los Angeles, where he and his wife, Barrett, are expecting their third child in May.

New Year's Resolutions from NKOTBSB

People.com has posted an article about New Year's Resolutions of the members of NKOTB and BSB:

Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block Reveal New Year's Resolutions
By Paul Chi

The Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block ended 2010 on a high note with a rollicking New Year's Eve mashup of their greatest hits in Times Square. But the guys still see room for improvement in 2011.

"I want to act more like an adult," New Kid Joey McIntyre, 38, who will welcome his third child in May, told PEOPLE about his New Year's resolutions.

"Being in a rock 'n' roll and pop world, it's very easy to act like a kid. So, my resolution is to really act like an adult. It's a personal inventory that I'm trying to take."

Backstreet Boys Nick Carter, 30, and Brian Littrell, 35, will be turning over new leaves of their own. Carter's resolutions? "Not to talk so much on the phone, and no texting while driving," he says. "And I just want to stay fit."

And Littrell? "To read more books and try to make better music."

The two bands have been rubbing elbows ever since the Backstreet Boys made a surprise appearance at a NKOTB show at Radio City Music Hall last summer. Now, they have a whole North American tour planned together for summer 2011.

"We haven't really explored everything about each other. We're taking it slow and just being gentle with each other," McIntyre says jokingly. "We get along really well. These are the best group of guys. We have a lot of shared experiences, and when we get together, it's an amazing way to make a living."

Asked which New Kid is most like which Backstreet Boy, New Kid Donnie Wahlberg, 41, replied: "You'd think it's Joe and Nick who are the same and Donnie and A.J. [McLean, 32] are the tough ones. But if you are in the band, you know that every person is more than what they are perceived."

Wahlberg adds: "A.J. is not the bad boy. He's a sweetheart. And Joe's not the young one. He's wise beyond his years. There's multi layers to everyone, which makes us all different, and that makes it great."

Joey McIntyre Shows in Las Vegas

Joey and Eman (Emanuel Kiriakou) will be doing a show every Saturday night in Las Vegas during the month a February. It's at the Palms Casino Resort February 5, 12, 19 and 26th. Tickets go on sale on Saturday, January 8 at 12 Noon. You can buy tickets at Ticketmaster. VIP info will be released soon.
